John had learned millwork in Germany and soon had work at the Widow Tugel´s mill at Senate Grove. This was the first flour mill in Franklin County. Mrs. Tugel´s husband had died and she had two small children, Louise and Josephine. Later Louise married Mr. Niemann and then Mr. Biele. Josephine married Mr. Brueggemann.
John Kemper leased the mill from Mrs. Tugel and later married her. They had one daughter, Laverne. Mrs. Kemper became very ill and her sister Lavina, a widow one son, came to take care of her. When Mrs. Kemper died leaving three small children, Louise, Josephine and Laverne, John married her sister, Mrs. Lavina Biehle, and adopted her son, Oliver Biehle. John and Lavina had one son, John Kemper Jr. (1854-1917). John helped his father in the mill and after his fathers death took over the milling business. It was known as Kemper´s Mill.
