Edward J. Kemper, son of Christoph and Johanna (Berger) Kemper, took over his father's grape-growing business outside Hermann in 1897. He renamed it Hermann Grape Nurseries, and encouraged by mentor George Husmann, he attended the University of Missouri to learn more about viticulture. He marketed his grape vine cuttings by mail order as well as locally; was active in agricultural and horticultural affairs of the county and state, and became an avid photographer who left behind an invaluable collection documenting Hermann life.

In 1902, he married Anna Gaebler (1880-1968), who bore him three daughters:Edna, Esther, and Anna. After Prohibition became law, the Kempers adapted by turning their vineyards into apple orchards.

Edward Kemper left behind a large number of photographic glass plate negatives, and in 1998, his daughter, Anna Kemper Hesse, collaborated with Oliver A. Schuchard and others to publish a book about Hermann life, "Little Germany on the Missouri: The Photographs of Edward J. Kemper, 1895-1920" (Columbia, MO: University of Missouri Press, 1998).
