Kopie Unterlagen Herr Willer:
Christoph (he did not use his first name) seeing the need for coopers in this community of Hermann, went to Cincinnati to learn the trade. He remaines there for two years and on returning to Hermann in 1850 purchased 240 acres of land in Frene Creek Valley and immediately planted two acres in grapes. For several years he followed carpentry, cooperage and mill building but later turned exclusively to agricultural pursuits. In 1855 he married Johanna Berger (1835-1904), a native of Kreis Hereford, Prussia, who had come to America at age 12 with her parents Johann Heinrich Berger and wife Anna (Tilker) and settled at Drake. Christoph had met Johanna when he was doing carpenter work for his brother John at the Senate Grove Mill which John was running for the Widow Tugel. Johanna was working as childrens` maid in the Tugel home. Christoph and Johanna Kemper had nine children...
Christoph and his family were members of St. Paul Church at Hermann. He and his brother Simon were very efficient in cabinet work and some of these (bench, tables, chairs, cupboard and wardrobes, are heirlooms in the family. The Kemper Homestead is listed in Missouri Historic Sites Catalogue (1963) by Dorothy Caldwell.
