It is believed that August joined the merchant marines before the turn of the century and left the marines in the mid 20´s. Before World War I, he served on the British steamship "Empress of China" which went aground ney Yokohama 26 July 1911 and he then serverd on The "Empress of Asia". It is uncertain what August did during World War I. After the war it is believed that he served once again on the "Empress of Asia", though there is no documentation of this. He was ship´s carpenter and sergeant-at-arms on the Canadian Pacific Steamship line, and was based out of Vancouver, British Columbia. He sailed extensively around China and Japan and was proficient with chopsticks. It is in Canada that he is said to have hunted bear and thus acquired the name "The Bearhunter". Also, he owned a small sailing vessel of his own. He often took friends and familiy up the Indian River out of Vancouver. When he returned from Canada he stayed with various family members earning his keep with his carpentry skills. It is believed that he lent his skills to the building of the church at Ryors, Missouri. He was Carpenter. He and Mary Leffmann were divorced at Missouri.
