Kopien Willer: August Sander was born in, or before the year 1841 in Lemgo, Lippe-Detmold. Fred Schroeder No. 15 said August was employed in Bruceville, Ind., as a blacksmith at he time of his enlistment. Anton had died; the Sander girls were al married, and Sophie sander was living in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Johann C. Schroeder.
Herman Schroeder was present when August came home to announce his enlistment and instant departure, and in later years Herman told us that Sophie wept aloud and wrung her hands and cried out, "He will be killed. I know he will be killed; I´ll never see him again!" Herman said August was so affected by her reaction his hands shock so that he could hardly lock his trunk. Fried Schroeder told us August was first stationed for some months at Hopkinsville, Ky. and so got to come home several times on furloughs.
